Magazine Advert Analysis

In this issue of ‘BIG CHEESE’, the band featured is the famous ‘Avenged Sevenfold’, and their featured story is described as ‘triumph, tragedy and beyond’.

The photo used in this cover is a group shot of the four band members. They are all quite close together, and posing similarly to one another. This emphasizes that there is no leader in the band and that they are all on the same level as one another; creating a sense equality and friendship. Their posing is relaxed and casual; which emphasizes a kind of “cool” attitude and a sense of calmness and easy-going. Their mis en scene is very punk and rock; their clothing, piercings, tattoos. This shows the genre of the band and represents the type of music played by them. Also, the colours of their clothing are blacks and whites. These contrasting colours create like a punk like look.

The colours used on the magazine cover are blacks, whites and reds. These colours –especially in the title- are deep, strong colours and match the magazine’s genre correctly: punk, rock etc. They also create a series tone to the magazine; the blacks and whites of the magazine name are plain and solid.

The layout is set out simply.  The main cover line is placed central on the cover, middle on the band members. This creates your eye to be drawn to bright, strong title and also to view the band members; creating a focus. The masthead is featured behind the photo of the band members and the other cover lines are featured in the bottom right of the page. The barcode is placed under the cover lines, and advertisements such as 'free CD!'; which is placed at the top left corner of the page.
